Checklist for Kayak & Canoe Paddling

So you want to go paddling? Great idea! But what do you need to bring so you ensure a great trip with lots of fun? The more paddle trips you take, your list will grow (or shrink) or at least get fine-tuned based on what you like to do and what kind of paddling you do.

Here’s a list we compiled to get you started on a basic, half-day flat water paddling trip – MUST have items are starred (*):

    Kayak or Canoe*
You may have your own boat or you may choose to rent one

    Transport
If you’re going with an outfitter, you probably don’t need to worry about transport too much, but if you’re going on you’re own, consider:

    Gear

    • paddle(s)* (click here to learn how to choose a paddle)
    • folding backup/emergency paddle
    • paddle float
    • canoe float
    • spray skirt (for kayaks)
    • helmet (for whitewater or surf)
    • PFD or Life Vest*
    • dry bag
    • bailer, bilge pump, sponges

    Clothing

    • hat
    • moisture wicking shirt, shorts
    • waterproof gloves (in colder weather)
    • water resistant pants, jacket or dry suit (in colder weather)
    • neoprene booties (in colder weather)
    • watershoes or sturdy sandals
    • extra dry shirts, shorts, clothing (for after the trip)

    Accessories

    • sunscreen*
    • first aid kit*
    • emergency whistle or other signaling tool
    • cell phone
    • bottled water* or water filtration system
    • food* (energy bars, sandwiches, snacks)
    • cooler
    • camera
    • binoculars
    • towel
    • maps
    • gps
    • sunglasses
    • lip balm
    • bug repellent
    • bungee cords
    • tow rope

    Tell Someone*

    • where you are going*
    • how long you plan to be gone*
    • check in with them when you’re shoving off and again when you’re out of the water at the end of your trip*

This last item on the checklist is one of the most important, and also one that most people forget or just don’t do. We’re just as guilty, but it is important to remember that accidents can happen anywhere and at anytime no matter how prepared you are. So let check in with someone on land whenever you go paddling.

Have fun and stay safe on the water!
