Kayak Virginia: Paddle the Blueways of Franklin County Virginia

Kayak and canoe enthusiasts, if you’re looking to kayak or canoe in Virginia, check out Franklin County.

Just 20 minutes from Roanoke, VA, Franklin County in southern central Virginia offers a variety of blueways, rivers and water trails. Flatwater, whitewater – paddlers of all skill levels can find a great ride in Franklin County.

Kayak Virginia - Paddle Franklin County VARivers in Franklin County VA include the Pigg River, Blackwater River, Smith River and the Roanoke River Gorge.

If you love whitewater kayaking, you’ll be glad to know that Franklin County has the Veteran’s Memorial Whitewater Facility. Also, the Pigg River Whitewater Park is partially complete and useable with additional park areas currently under development.

Canoeing and Kayaking: Paddling Challenge

If you are looking for a paddling challenge, and you are physically prepared to paddle long distances in difficult conditions then you will need to check out the Dam to Dam Paddle in Chattanooga, Tennessee.  

Outdoor Chattanooga is having their first annual extreme river adventure. Kayaking and Canoeing the Tennessee River Blueway from Chickamauga Dam to Nickajack Dam. This 50 mile in two days paddling challenge is being held on Saturday & Sunday, October 24 & 25.

Saturday morning paddlers will put in at the Greenway Farm on North Chickamauga Creek and paddle 27 miles to the Pot Point Campsite. According to their website, Outdoor Chattanooga will provide dinner and Sunday morning breakfast. Sunday will be the remaining 23 mile paddle to the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Shellmound Recreation Area on Nickajack Lake .

Outdoor Chattanooga states on their website that this event is not for beginners. It is for highly experienced and physically fit kayakers and canoeists only.  If you are interested in this paddling event you better hurry and register. According to their website, registration must be received by October 22nd.
