Kayak, Canoe Rhode Island Blueways this Summer
(Information and logo courtesy of www.exploreri.org)
There are a few more organized paddles left for kayaker and canoers who want to explore the rivers, ponds, and bays in southern New England. These paddle events are organized by the Rhode Island Blueways Alliance (RIBA) along with local paddle groups and partners.
Know before you go:
- Events require advanced registration.
- You’ll need your own boat unless stated that rentals are available
- All paddlers and participants must wear life vests (PFDs) when on the water. PFDs must be worn in the manner intended by the manufacturer.
- It’s a good idea to bring snacks, water, and sunscreen.
- For more details contact the organizers of the events.
- Check www.exploreri.org for even more information about these and other paddling events.
Here are the events remaining this summer:

Ninigret Kayak Trip
Saturday, July 17: This is a special trip presented in partnership between Salt Ponds Coalition and The Nature Conservancy. We will meet up at the kayak launch at Grassy Point in Ninigret Park at 8:30 a.m. and tour the central portion of Ninigret Pond. We will hear about shellfish transplants in the pond, explore hidden coves and waterways, and, conditions permitting, navigate part of the breachway for a look at storm damage from the winter nor-easters. This event will coincide with our July Salt Pond Safari and the group will stop to participate in one of the net hauls. There is no fee for this trip, but donations to the Abby Auckerman Scholarship Fund are accepted. Sponsored by Salt Ponds Coalition. Contact Mark Bullinger, 401.322.3068 or mbullinger@gmail.com.
Ranger Night on the Blackstone River
Tuesday, July 20: Join the Blackstone Valley Paddle Club for “Ranger Night” when National Park Service Ranger, Suzanne Buchanan, will lead this interpretive paddle. Want a different view of the city? Paddle right up into the “Basin” at Waterplace Park and under the Providence Place Mall. Trip begins at 6:15 p.m. and includes a short crossing to paddle before going through the hurricane barrier and into the Providence River. There may be some chop while crossing; kayak skirts are recommended. A limited number of canoes and kayaks can be reserved for a fee from Great Canadian. Call 508.865.0010 to reserve boat. Sponsored by Blackstone Valley Paddle Club (Membership requirements are waived for this Paddle 2010 event.) Contact Cheryl Thompson Cameron, 401.647.5887, or stonefoxfarm@juno.com.
