2010 Kayak and Canoe Races

If you’re looking for a kayak or canoe race in March and you live in Texas or Connecticut than you’re in luck!
Texas
The Buffalo Bayou Partnership, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing Houston’s historic waterway, will have The Buffalo Bayou Regatta on Saturday, March 13. This is Texas’ largest canoe and kayak race. This is a 15 mile paddling race on the Buffalo Bayou through downtown Houston. The race will begin at San Felipe and Voss and finish at downtown’s Sesquicentennial Park.

Connecticut
The 19th Annual Scantic Spring Splash will be held on Saturday, March 27, in Enfield, CT.  This is a downriver canoe and kayak race. There are two classes: racing and novice.
According to their website:
The racing course is five miles with one mandatory portage from Somersville, Ct to Powder Hollow Barn in Hazardville.  There are three class II Rapids, including the popular finish area.
This race is part of the New England Canoe association series (NECRA).

The novice course, which has Class 1 rapids, is 2.5 miles of downriver racing from Somersville, Ct to the RT-191 Bridge (Broadbrook Road, Enfield,Ct).
Registration will be available online beginning March 1st.
They are offering an entry fee discount with a donation to the Enfield Food Shelf. Their goal is to fill up a canoe with non-perishable food items.

Kayaking and Canoeing in Connecticut

Here are two kayak and canoe events in Connecticut that really have something for paddlers of all levels! These events sound like a lot of fun whether you’re a competitive paddler or a recreational paddler.

The Great Pachaug Canoe and Kayak Race

  • Sunday, September 27, 2009
  • Hopeville Pond State Park, Griswold Connecticut.
  • According to their website, this event is for both the seasoned paddler and the recreational paddler. There will be three paddling courses. One for racing canoes, which is 10 miles, another for racing kayaks, also 10 miles, and the third course will be a 2.8 mile paddle for recreational boaters. This event benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. 

The Third Annual Mannkind Candlewood Lake Canoe and Kayak Race

  • Saturday, September 26, 2009
  • Brookfield Town Park, Brookfield, Connecticut.
  • Divisions: tandem canoe, solo canoe, 12 foot & under kayaks, tandem kayaks, 14 foot & over kayaks, and ironman. Men’s, Women’s, mixed, family, youth and senior. According to their website canoe and kayak rentals are available. They will also be the First Annual War Canoe Race with youth and adult divisions.
